Microsoft Patch Tuesday, October 2013, has 8 updates and Surface Pro firmware

Windows 8.1 update

Today is Patch Tuesday, October 2013, and Microsoft is rolling out a total of eight security updates affecting Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server operating system, Office 2013 RT, and various Microsoft products.

Also in preparation to the release of Windows 8.1, Microsoft has issued a firmware update for Surface Pro, which needs to be applied prior updating to 8.1 on October 18th. Here is what you’ll find in this update:

  • UEFI firmware updates.
  • System Aggregator firmware updates.
  • Various device driver updates to enhance the Windows 8.1 update experience, and optimizations for using Type Cover 2 or Surface Touch Cover 2.
Note: Surface RT running Windows RT isn’t getting a firmware update this month.

Out of the eight new Windows updates for October, four of them are marked as Critical and are related to Remote Code Execution for .NET Framework, Internet Explorer, and Windows. The remaining four updates are marked as Important and they also deal with Remote Code Execution and Information Disclosure for Windows, Office, and Silverlight.

The rollout will start soon, I’ll be updating this article as more details become available. Remember that you can update manually by going to the Control Panel, clicking Windows Update, and then clicking Check of Update, or you can wait to the next restart and they will install automatically.
