Threshold for Windows Phone and tablets rumored to debut in early 2015

Windows RT and Window Phone devices

Aligning with previous report of Microsoft merging Windows Phone OS with Windows RT, a new rumor from Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet strongly suggests that a single merged version of the operating system could arrive as part of the Threshold wave of updates in early 2015 that will run on Windows Phone headsets as well as on tablets based on ARM processors like Surface 2.

According to the report, Windows Threshold preview for mobile devices will be available sometime in January or February of 2015. Which is just a few months after the release of Threshold preview for Windows clients and few months apart of the final release.

As I previously mentioned, this new merged version of Windows for mobile will drop the desktop user interface entirely, leaving user with only the Metro interface, just like you see today in Windows Phone OS.

Microsoft is currently expected to present the next version of its operating system with some of the new features, which may or may not be called “Windows 9”, during a special event on September 30th, with a final public release expected to see the light sometime in spring 2015.

Windows Threshold will mark a significant change of how Microsoft do business with the operating system along with the introduction of new features and changes, such as Metro 2.0 and the return of the Start menu. The company is also planning to update the operating system in the monthly basis delivering bug and security fixes as well as new features, rather than waiting for the next version.

It’s worth noting that things can always change at the end, but knowing the accuracy record from Mary Jo Foley on Microsoft information, it’s highly likely that this information will be true.
