The download ISO files for Windows 10 build 10147 from the Microsoft partner’s channel recently leaked onto the web, unveiling a number of changes and improvements over the last official build. The new unofficial preview shows purely tweaks around the user interface and performance improvements. In addition, the company finally renamed its web browser to “Microsoft Edge,” and we can see many other small changes.
As always, this is not an official build, as such it’s not recommended to download the ISO files and install the operating system on your main computer, as it’s not supported by Microsoft. What’s new in Windows 10 build 10147:
Start menu
- The “New” label next to “All apps” now takes the Windows color scheme
- All apps and File Explorer buttons in the Start menu have new icons
- Music, Mail, and Camera app tiles also have new icons
- 3D flip animation for Live Tiles is back
Desktop
- “Display settings” and “Personalize” options in the context menu get new icons
- Quick access on File Explorer get new default pins
- Control Panel gets new icons and user experience refinements
Taskbar
- Date and time now include blur and transparency
- The “Show hidden icons” button has been updated
- The “Jump Lists” user interface received an update. Users will see Pinned and Frequent items separated from the basic options
- Windows apps now feature bigger white icons without background, and they do not look like tiles anymore
Cortana
- There is a new “Try Cortana” button if you haven’t enabled the feature
- The menu has been simplified
- Various other subtle changes in the initial setup
Tablet mode
- Tablet mode gets a power and “All apps” buttons at the bottom of the screen
Action Center
- Action Center is updated with better blur and transparency effect
Settings
- There is a new animation effect moving between settings
Windows apps
- Phone Companion app appears on build 10147, but it’s not working
- Contact Support app gets updated and now works
Microsoft Edge
- There is a new Hub icon
- Users can choose between a “Lighter” or “Dark” theme
- “Open with” now has a new “Start page” option, and users can specify one or multiple pages to open as new tabs
- “Show the home button” and “Block pop-up” have been moved to the Advanced settings
- Users can enable or disable passwords and manage saved passwords
- Users can drag the tab out to create new windows
- Closing the browser, users now get a warning to close all the tabs
Even though Microsoft has said not to expect any more big changes and surprises on the preview builds of Windows 10, as the operating system is almost complete, build 10147 includes a number of good changes that can be considered a very significant preview. This particular version of the operating system is more stable and snappier, and overall, the performance is great.
Microsoft plans to release Windows 10 on July 29th. Users are already being offered to reserve their copy for free on Windows 7 and Windows 8 devices, and we expect Windows 10 to roll out in 111 languages and 190 countries.
