How to change the logon screen with a custom background on Windows 10

Here are the instructions to set your own custom background image in the Windows 10 logon screen.

Change logo background in Windows 10

In my previous tutorial we went through the instructions to remove the logon screen default background in Windows 10, but many people may also be looking to change the default logon screen for a custom background instead of using a solid color to fill the screen.

Changing the background is a little more challenging, while you can easily change the registry to remove the default logon screen image, Microsoft doesn’t offer a direct registry key that you can modify to add your own custom image.

However, the default background is part of the Windows.UI.Logon.pri file within the operating system, and changing the image in the PRI file allows you add your own custom image, that way you don’t have to look at as solid color or the default image every day.

The good news is that you don’t have to do this process manually, there is actually a third-party app called “Windows 10 Login Background Changer”.

The app is free designed by a Reddit user Krutonium, and you can download Windows 10 Login Background Changer from Github. However, before applying any changes, make sure you understand that the app is offered “as is” and you’ll have to use as your own risk. While the app works well and it has been updated to fix previous bugs, you’ll be modifying a Windows system file that could cause problems to your system. As such, make sure that you create a full backup and/or create a system restore point to recover your system in case something happens.

  1. Download Windows 10 Login Background Changer.

  2. Extract the files and browse the GUI folder.

  3. Launch the app as an administrator by double-clicking “W10 Logon BG Changer.exe”.

  4. On “Edit Background”, pick your custom background and preview the changes. Don’t know what image to use? You can find many great images at the Microsoft Desktop Background page.

  5. Once you like the new background, simply click the Apply Changes button at the bottom of the app.

Finally, simply reboot your computer to verify that everything is working correctly. At the time to enter your password to sign-in to Windows 10, you’ll see the new background image.

If you want to restore the default settings, you can always launch the app again and click the Restore Defaults button.
