On Wednesday, just a little over 14 weeks of the final release of IE9, Microsoft made available for download Internet Explorer 10 platform preview 2 for developers to test drive.

In this latest release IE10 has a much improved HTML5 support and developers can start working on web applications with several site-ready HTML5 technologies and achieve better performance and greater security. Microsoft have posted over 270 new tests to the Internet Explorer Test Center and submitted them to the standards bodies. In Internet Explorer 10 platform preview 2 you can find all these (here is the full list):

  • Positioned Floats
  • CSS3 Gradients (on all image types)
  • CSS stylesheet limit lifted
  • CSSOM Floating Point Value support
  • Improved hit testing APIs
  • Media Query Listeners

  • HTML5 Sandbox
  • HTML5 Web Workers
  • Web Performance APIs:

“IE10 continues IE9’s precedent of enabling Web applications to do more in the browser without plug-ins. It also continues the pattern of offloading work to the parts of a PC that are best suited for them, like the GPU for graphics, and different processor cores for background compilation of JavaScript.” Said Dean Hachamovitch the leader of the IE team at Microsoft. “As different browsers support developers using the same markup to achieve the same results with great performance, we can all realize the promise of HTML5 applications.”

Internet Explorer 10 is expected to be available only for Windows 7 and in the next version of Microsoft’s operating system code name Windows 8. Future releases of IE10 PP will be available in cycles of 8 to 12 weeks periods. We may also have a beta release before the end of the year.

So if you are a tech enthusiast or a web developer you can download and test drive Internet Explorer 10 platform preview 2 today and start building beautiful and more interactive web applications.
