Windows 8 Beta is scheduled to be released in late February 2012 and that is when the Windows Store will come to life. And this is going to be the only allowed mechanism to obtain Metro-style apps, games and content.
This is not just about Windows 8 apps, users will also be able to grab books, magazines, and movies as well — this may change in the future but this is the goal. Microsoft also is trying really hard on grabbing app developers attention by sharing more revenue money for those who spend countless hours building a new app and do well monetizing. At first, the share revenue for each app that the company is going keep is 30% — not much to see here, this is the same as what Apple is doing right now –, then when the Windows 8 app reaches the $25,000 mark of sale, the software maker will allow the app owner to take 80% from this point and until the app dies.
The opportunity is tremendous here, just take this in consideration, Microsoft is already predicting that in the next 12 month over 400 million new x86 PCs are going to be sold, I think that this alone is a good reason to start building Windows apps.Plus the company is making really clear that they want to be transparent, different and flexible by giving developers more freedom and tools to get the apps quick in the Windows Store and start earning revenue.
Windows Store for Windows 8 is set to launch in late February 2012, if you are already building an app, just note that Microsoft at the beginning is only going to accept free apps and developers who are lucky enough to obtain an invite. Playing catch up or not, it is going to be interesting to see if the Windows Store is going to become a real competitor, since Apple is the one dominating this market space.
