Microsoft is announcing Office 365 Video, a new feature for Office 365 customers to publish and share videos within the company’s intranet. The new feature leverages SharePoint Online and Azure Media Service to deliver something very similar to YouTube.
Office 365 Video is described by Microsoft as one of the first NextGen portal that can be set up quickly and combines Yammer social integration, Office Graph machine learning, and mobile usage scenarios.
The YouTube like feature for Office 365 is rolling out now for customers on the First Release program with worldwide availability in early 2015.
Office 365 Video hope page consists on a spotlight section that lists all the most important videos, and the popular section highlights personalized and relevant content. Custom Channels helps users to find content that break by topics. The video page shows relevant information about the video and author, and comments and conversation threads are also supported.
Sharing a video is as easy as drag and drop content into the upload area. Once the video is uploaded, SharePoint Online and Azure Media Services handle the rest by transcoding the video in many different formats suitable for different screen sizes and for smooth streaming. The feature also supports video upload from any mobile device, which makes it easier to anyone to publish new content while on the road.
Thanks to the power of Active Directory, managers can set permissions to channels and specific videos, defining who can view and who can upload videos.
In future updates, the company is planning to release new functionality and cover more mobile devices, “publish to” scenarios using Office 365 Video with Office Mix to publish new content, add recommendations powered by Office Graphs, share playlists, and the ability to embed videos throughout the intranet.
Office 365 Video is limited to this licensing: Office 365 E1, E2, E3 and E4 subscription plans (and the corresponding A2, A3 and A4 plans for Academic customers).
