Microsoft officially announces that Cortana is coming as an app you can install on Android and iOS. The announcement was made by Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore, who revealed today that the company is building a new “Phone Companion”, which will come built-in in Windows 10 to help users connect whichever phone they have – whether it’s a Windows Phone, Android phone, or iPhone — with the new operating system.
According to a new article from the official Windows Blog, the company is planning to make available separate apps for the other two mobile operating systems (Android and iOS), which will mark the first time that Cortana will run outside of the Windows.
Microsoft is also offering an early preview of the Cortana app, the company says that users will be able to work with the assistant as they do with the assistant on a Windows Phone. However, because the version of Cortana for iOS and Android won’t be able to have the same kind of integration like the version for Windows, Microsoft will still provide notification support, and the ability to ask queries and questions.
Users will get notifications for flights, sport results, and many more of Cortana’s features that already appear in Windows 10 and Windows Phone.
The software giant is expected to release Cortana for Android app in late June, while the iOS app for iPhone and iPad will arrive sometime this year.
Cortana across platforms is part of a Microsoft strategy to bring many of its apps and services to all smartphones with the new “Phone Companion” experience, which will allow users to connect their Windows 10 PCs with other apps such as OneDrive, OneNote, Office, and many more.
