Microsoft begins to enroll Insiders to the Windows 10 ‘Redstone’ branch

Latest cumulative update for Windows 10 configures registry to enroll Insiders to receive the first build of Redstone - the next major update of Windows.

Windows 10 Redstone registry enrollment

Microsoft recently released Windows 10 version 1511 (Threshold 2) to the public, which is the first major update the company is releasing since the operating system officially launched back in July. The update brings a lot of changes and features, ranging from improvements in the Start menu, Microsoft Edge, and many new options in Settings that makes Windows 10 more stable and smooth.

However, it’s does not mean that the work is over, we already know that Microsoft is working in the next version of the operating system codenamed “Redstone”, and it will be a more significant update than Threshold 2.

Furthermore, in the latest cumulative update (KB3118754) that the company rolled out for Windows 10, we start to see that Microsoft is already preparing computers in the Windows Insider Program to receive the first Redstone build. As it has been reported that KB3118754 enrolls computers to the “rs1_release” by adding a few entries in the registry.

The new change can be found navigating the following registry path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability

We still don’t know exactly the features and improvements Microsoft plans to deliver with the new version of Windows 10 codenamed “Redstone”, but we know that it will focus on improving support for new hardware, primarily mobile devices, Surface Hub, Xbox, HoloLens, Microsoft Band 2, and other products operating on Windows 10.

Previous rumors also suggest that Microsoft is planning to improve Continuum bringing similar functionality like the Apple’s OS X Continuity that will allow deeper integration of Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile.

In addition, we’re also expecting the company to bring extensions support to Microsoft Edge, which is one of the highly requested features by the community.

Windows 10 Redstone will arrive in two parts and the release date should be sometime in mid-2016. As for the first Redstone build, Microsoft has released the Windows 10 November update, as such it’s not sharing any details at this time, but there is a solid chance that we could be seeing the first Redstone build by the end of the year.
