Microsoft is making some changes to its Xbox gamertag system to allow gamers to choose any name that they want to use. The changes make the gamertag system function like the systems used on Discord or Steam, which means that you can pick any gamertag (username) that you want, but if the name is already taken a hashtag with a number after your pick will be added.

If you’re comfortable using your existing name, you don’t need to do anything, but if you want something different, Microsoft now allows you to change it to anything you want for free the first time, then it’ll cost you $9.99.

In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to change your Xbox gamertag on Xbox Live.
