How to check if Windows 10 20H2 is installed on your PC

The October 2020 Update (version 20H2) is the next major refresh of Windows 10, but is it already installed on your PC? Here's how to find out.

Windows 10 20H2, October 2020 Update, is the second semi-annual feature update rolling out begin October 20, but because these upgrades are incremental and they’re simply known as “Windows 10,” it’s confusing to know which version your computer is running.

Although you won’t find the official name anywhere, each release of Windows 10 receives a specific version number. In this case, the second major update for 2020 is known as version “20H2,” since the company is no longer using just numbers like “2004” for the May 2020 Update, and moving forward each version number will reflect the year and part of the year (haft one or half two) to indicate when the feature update will be general available.

If you are not sure which version of Windows 10 is on your device, you can check this information using the “winver” command and “About” settings page.

In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to determine if the Windows 10 version 20H2 is already installed on your computer.

Check if Windows 10 20H2 is installed with winver

To check whether the Windows 10 20H2 is installed on your device, use these steps:

  1. Open Start on Windows 10.

  2. Search for winver and press Enter.

Check Windows 10 20H2 with winver

If the “About Windows” dialog shows “Version 20H2” along with “OS Build 19042.572” (or a later build number), then the Windows 10 October 2020 Update is installed on your computer.

Check if Windows 10 20H2 is installed with Settings

To confirm if your device has the Windows 10 20H2, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Click on System.

  3. Click on About.

Windows 10 20H2 check with Settings
Windows 10 20H2 check with Settings

In the “About” page, under “Version”, you should see the 20H2 number, and under “OS Build”, the number should be 19042.572 or later.

Usually, Windows 10 will never install a new version without notifying you, and after an upgrade, during the first loggin, Microsoft Edge usually opens displaying a welcome message of the new version.
