CES 2017 — Dell has transformed its XPS 13 laptop into a 2-in-1 hybrid. Dell XPS 13 has been one of the most popular laptops in the market for a few years, and now the company is introducing a new version. It’s the XPS 13 2-in-1.
As the name implies, it’s a convertible laptop that you can use as a tablet as well. But to be clear, Dell isn’t attempting to replace its popular XPS 13 laptop, it’s just another version that is going to be significantly slower device.
If you remember last year Intel’s “Core m” processor that were distinctly slower than the “Core i” processors. Well, it’s exactly what you’ll be getting with the 2-in-1, but Intel has changed the name of the processor to “Core i” to confuse you. However, Dell notes that the new “Core m” with the new name will be faster than last year, and close to the “Core i” processors from last year, so you shouldn’t notice a lot of performance difference.
As for the design of the new XPS 13 2-in-1 hybrid, it’s a little lighter and smaller than the XPS 13 laptop featuring a full HD (1920 x 1080) InfinityEdge display very narrow bezels. Obviously, a significant drop from the 4K screen resolution found in the laptop version.
In addition, because it’s using a lower-end processor, the 2-in-1 is also a fanless computer, which should make the device quieter and cooler.
Ports are also different in the new device. For example, there are not full-sized USB ports. Instead, you have two USB Type-C ports, which one of them is also a thunderbolt 3 port, and you’ll also get a microSD card slot.
If you have devices that connect using traditional USB ports, the new 2-in-1 includes a USB-A adapter, which isn’t pretty but it does the job.
The battery in the XPS 13 2-in-1 is also smaller. Dell says that it’s 70 percent the size of the standard XPS 13 laptop battery. Though, the company claims that you’ll get 15 hours of battery life on a single charge.
Like pretty much every new Windows 10 PC, Dell’s latest computer includes a Windows Hello camera to use biometric authentication.
The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 will be available in January for a starting price of $999, which is about $100 more than the XPS 13 laptop. Although, it’s likely that many people will continue to pick the laptop version, if you want a more mobile device that you can use as tablet, perhaps the XPS 13 2-in-1 is what you’ve been waiting for.
