Microsoft starts rolling out Surface Pro 2 firmware fix update (update)

Surface RT and Surface Pro Patch Tuesday Firmware update

Microsoft seems to be finally rolling out the firmware update for Surface Pro 2 to fix previous issues. This is according to social media and online forums. But here is the thing, ZDNet also reports that sources familiar on the matter said that this firmware update may be one of several updates or even partial.

The Surface Pro 2 firmware update seems to be the one that fixes the issues users have complained about, including: tablet entering into sleep mode and draining the battery faster than expected, among other problems, which were caused by the December 2013 firmware update, though it is unclear if this is the case.

Like every second Tuesday of every month, early this week Microsoft released its Patch Tuesday, but users found out that the company only made available Windows and first-gen Surface Pro running Windows 8.0 updates. And there was not official comments from the software giant other than they will release the Surface Pro 2 firmware update as soon as possible.

Surface Pro 2 firmware update January 2014

Mary Jo Foley also reports that a few users on the Microsoft’s Answers Forum have installed the January 18, 2014, firmware update on his Surface Pro 2 and they note that the previous problem (cold booting with a micro SD card still there) and it’s also causing high CPU utilization. Microsoft has yet to comment and the company still didn’t update the Surface Pro 2 Update History page. I’ll be updating the article as new information from Microsoft becomes available.

Are you seeing the Surface Pro 2 January firmware update? Did it fix the problems for you? Be the first and let us know your results. Thanks,

Update: Here is the official Microsoft statement on January firmware update for Surface Pro 2:

“This weekend we released an update that addresses the unexpected wake and battery drain behavior experienced by a small number of Surface Pro 2 customers who installed the December Windows Update. This should have no impact on customers who had not received the December update. We are working hard to deliver the rest of the December update to those customers who had not received it prior to it being removed from distribution.”

Update: Microsoft finally notes what’s in January 14th, 2014, firmware update of Surface Pro 2 at the Update History page

  • Updated UEFI firmware, version 2.04.0350, to resolve behavior where the Surface failed to enter sleep while idle, negatively impacting battery life.
