How to resize two snapped windows at the same time on Windows 10

Snap gets more useful in Windows 10 by automatically resizing adjacent windows, when your resize the other window.

Windows 10 Snap settings

Snap in Windows 10 has been improved with a number of new tweaks such as Snap Assist, which will automatically suggests which apps to snap next to the side of the screen, you can snap up to four windows in one display, and now when you resize a spanned window, you can have the operating system simultaneously resize the adjacent window.

If you have been using the Snap feature in Windows 10, you probably came across the scenario where you have snapped two apps, each using 50 percent of the screen real estate, but sometimes you may want to resize one of the windows, when you’ll notice that you’ll also have to manually resize the adjacent window as well. While this is not a complicated task, many users would expect both apps to rezise at the same time when you’re resizing one of the windows.

Starting Windows 10 build 10547 and later, Microsoft is addressing this issue by adding a new setting to allow the second snapped window to resize automatically at the same time when you’re resizing the first window.

Resize two snapped windows simultaneously

  1. Use the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.

  2. Go to System and navigate to Multitaksing.

  3. If you’re running Windows 10 build 10547 or a later version you’ll notice a fourth option under Snap: “When I resize a snapped window, simultaneously resize any adjacent window”. The only thing you have to do is to make sure the pill switch is in the On position.

Once you have enabled the feature, you can snap two windows, then hover the mouse cursor over the edge where the two windows intercept, and you’ll notice a slider will appear, which you can move left or right to resize the two windows at once.

Keep in mind that this feature only works when you have two snapped windows, and it will not work when you have three or four windows snapped on the screen.

Additionally, while you’re still Multitaksing, you can enable or disable Snap with the “Arrange windows automatically by dragging them to the sides or corners of the screen” option. There also the “When I snap a window, automatically size it to fill available space”, and you can enable or disable Snap Assist with the “When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it” option.
