Microsoft officially announced the Lumia 535 smartphone, and it’s the first phone that scratches off the Nokia branding in favor of Microsoft – you’ll find the new branding in the front and back –. The Lumia 535 is basically a low-cost smartphone running Windows Phone 8.1 and it comes with Lumia Denim Update preinstalled. However, current Lumia devices will continue showing the Nokia branding.
The Lumia 535 ships with “5x5x5 proposition”, which means that integrates 5 of the Microsoft services: OneDrive, Skype, Office, OneNote, and Cortana. The Microsoft’s branded Windows Phone also features a 5 megapixels front and back facing cameras and a roomy 5-inch qHD display with a screen resolution of 960 x 540 with very acceptable viewing angles, but when compare with other phones, you’ll clearly see the pixels in this device. It’s not a very high-resolution display, but considering its price, it’s more than enough.
Specifications
Under the hood, you’ll find a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 quad-core processor, 8GB of internal storage with a slide in microSD card slot, supporting up to 128GB, and 1GB of RAM, which doubles the usual 512MB. It’s something worth noting as many of the Windows Phone games require higher memory.
The hardware will be powered by a 1905mAh battery, which technically should power the phone all day.
Design
The design of the Lumia 535 is a sequel to the Nokia Lumia 530 with the same characteristics, plastic back with clean rounded lines in the corners, but the 535 is slimmer at 9.4mm thick and bigger. Also the Lumia 535 features removable glossy plastic shells to fit your style and you can choose from 5 colors: cyan, bright green, bright orange, white, dark gray, and black. The smartphone is big enough that it will still fit on your hand, however you’ll probably need your two hands to type a message.
Accessories
As for accessories, Microsoft will ship a flip cover to protect the phone and screen and it also features a credit card pocket on the screen cover.
The Microsoft Lumia 535 comes in two versions: 3G Single SIM or 3G Smart Dual SIM, but surprisingly enough there is not a 4G LTE version, but it’s understandable considering the company is aiming this phone to strategic growing markets to keep Windows Phone alive. Initially the 535 will ship in November in China, Russia, Ukraine, Indonesia, and the Philippines, while Australia, Thailand, Vietnam and other Asian markets will get the new phone in December. In January 2015 will ship the phone to Latin American countries and to the UK in the first quarter of 2015 – no word for US market –. Pricing will vary from market to market, but it has an estimated of 110 Euros ($130), which is a little more expensive than the Lumia 530 priced at $114, but you’re getting more for your money with the new phone.
Although, Microsoft has struggled throughout the years in the phone market, the Microsoft Lumia 535 isn’t exceptionally good device. It’s just the first Microsoft branded phone that will help the company to show what an affordable phone can do.
