Microsoft says that it will recall Surface Pro 3 and earlier versions of the tablet power cables after possible overheating concerns. According to a report from Channelnomics Europe, the software maker is planning a voluntary recall of power cords for its Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro models of the popular tablet.

However, the recall will only apply to device sold before July 2015. Microsoft has already confirmed the recall for a number of power cables in a statement to ZDNet.

“As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord. We will be releasing details of how customers can obtain a free replacement cable shortly.”

The company is also planning to announce the recall and other specific details on Friday, January 22, 2016. Microsoft explains that it will be providing free power cord exchanges for Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3 models sold before March 2015. In addition, the software maker notes that this is a worldwide voluntary recall and in the coming days there will be a specific website with information and details for customers.

The Channelnomics Europe report also says that the recall will be for power cables that are sharply or repeatedly bent or wrapped. Furthermore, the recall won’t extend to Surface Pro 4, as this model is not affected by the power cable overheating concern.

Update, January, 21, 2016: Microsoft begins the recoll for AC power cords for Microsoft Surface Pro, Microsoft Surface Pro 2, and Microsoft Surface Pro 3 devices sold before March 15, 2015, in the U.S. and Canada and before July 15, 2015, in other markets where Surface is sold. Keep in mind that you will be getting a free AC power cable, not a power supply. Here are all the details to get a free replacement.
