Microsoft Store offers $100 off on new PCs for those ditching Windows XP

Windows XP trade-in program for new Windows 8.1 PC

Microsoft is offering $100 off for customers who purchase a new Surface Pro 2 or Windows 8.1 PC worth $599 or more and ditch Windows XP once-and-for-all. The new promotional offer, according to the online Microsoft Store, is only valid from March 20th, 2014, and until June 15th, 2014, or while supplies last.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft retail stores in the U.S. and Canada are also participating of this $100 discount to purchase a new PC.

This is how the trade-in works: Go to the MicrosoftStore.com and look for the “Upgrade PC Windows XP” page and simply choose one of the Windows 8.1 PCs participating in this promotional offer. If you’re running Windows XP the offer will pop-up automatically.

If you prefer to go to a Microsoft retail store near you, just bring your Windows XP PC and you’ll save $100 in your new Windows 8.1 PC.

Keep in mind that the promotional offer is limit to one per person. Those who get the offer will also get 90-day of free Microsoft support in the new PC. And the software giant is offering PCMover Express software in partnership with Laplink to move all your documents, settings, photos, music, and videos from Windows XP to Windows 8.1.

The new promotional offer follows the previous promotion that was rewarding $50 gift cards to ditch Windows XP. As you know Microsoft is ending the support of Windows XP on April 8th, 2014, which means that the more than a decade old operating system will stop receiving security updates, hotfixes, and free and paid support. So the company is trying to raise awareness while promoting sales of new PCs. Will this make a dent on Windows 8.1 PC sales? Probably not, but it’s a good discount.
