Compare to the iPad one of many advantages of Surface RT is that it comes with a USB port built-in and you can well use it to connect, literally, thousands of peripherals. Now sadly the Surface team has said that this kind of scenario is not supported, even though there are many adapters around the web that are compatible with Windows 8.
