Office now free for iPad, iPhone, and Android, downloads now available

Office Online (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) links to create new documents

Microsoft wants to dominate the mobile space by keeping Office competitors out and to make it happen the company today is announcing that the popular Office suite is now free for iPad, iPhone, and Android as part of its “bringing Office to everyone” strategy. The app collection includes all the basics: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

This all means that from today and moving forward, consumers will not need an Office 365 subscription to access and edit documents stored in the cloud.

For those already using Office for iPad, now you can edit documents and get all the features offered for free. Of course, if you don’t have it, you can download the suite for free from the App Store (use the link below). If you also have an iPhone, today Microsoft is releasing a brand new Office for iPhone. Furthermore, the company is making available for download a preview of Office for Android tablets.

Microsoft recently also announced a partnership with Dropbox to bring Office integration to the storage cloud rival. And now iPad, iPhone, and Android users using Office can seamlessly create, edit, and share documents using Dropbox too.

To download the new Office for iPhone follow these links: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The software giant details that the features found in the version are the same found in iPad, which you can download here. The apps are available in 29 languages and in 136 countries, and they have a requirement of iOS 7.0 or later.

If you’re an Android tablet user, you can download the Office apps by signing up for the Preview, which is available immediately. Final release is expected in early 2015.

While home users can now access Office on mobile devices for free, Microsoft isn’t offering the same deal for businesses. An Office 365 subscription will still require to modify documents in OneDrive for Business or Dropbox for business and to access premium features, which indicates that Microsoft will still generate revenue with Office. Though, I can already see many businesses looking away and letting employees use their devices with free Office.

Microsoft says: “Office Everywhere, For Everyone. The world has changed. People expect to use Office on all their devices, and now they can.”

This is the new Microsoft, and I’m liking it.
