The Xbox Series X and S expandable storage will cost you $219.99, and it’ll be available on November 10, 2020. According to a report from The Verge, the final price of the accessory surfaced on the Best Buy website, and then it was officially confirmed on the preorder page at the Microsoft Store.
The external storage is available as a card (similar to the old memory cards for original PlayStation and Nintendo consoles), which you can connect to the back of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S to expand the capacity for an additional 1TB.
The storage solution is built by Seagate, and it uses proprietary Xbox Velocity Architecture technology that matches the internal Solid-State Drive (SSD) of the console for faster load times and more immersive gameplay.
The report also points out that is the first solution, but Microsoft is working to bring more suppliers and additional sizes. Although the storage device isn’t a requirement, it could eventually be necessary to download additional games, specifically for the Xbox Series S that only includes 512GB of internal storage, which is half of the capacity available with the Xbox Series X.
However, the price will be a shocking surprise to many gamers, since it costs almost as much as the Series S and half the price of the Series X. If you were to purchase this accessory, it’ll put the Xbox Series S total price to $519.98, and the Xbox Series X to $719.98.
If you are willing to trade capacity and performance for the price, you’ll be able to connect a USB 3.1+ external hard drive to store and play most games. However, games designed specifically for Xbox Series X and S will need to be stored on the internal or external proprietary SSD.
