Microsoft officially launched the Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update) on May 27, 2020, as the first semi-annual update that brings a slew of improvements and several new small features for the operating system.
However, the feature update has a small number of known issues, and as a result, the company isn’t making the feature update available to everyone immediately. Instead, it’s gradually rolling out the May 2020 Update to devices running Windows 10 version 1909 and 1903, which are known to be fully compatible first, and it’s placing a temporary block on devices that may not have a smooth upgrade experience.
This isn’t a new approach, Microsoft has been implementing blocks on incompatible devices for a long time, but in the past, it’s been difficult to know whether your device is having problems with Windows Update or a temporary block was in place. However, the company is making changes, and it’ll now offer a notification in the Windows Update settings page.
“The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on the way. We’re offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn’t quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you’ll see the update available on this page. There’s nothing you need to do at this time.” The notification reads.
The new notification offers some needed clarification, letting the user know that update isn’t ready. If you see this message, you also know that it’s not a good idea to use other tools, such as the Media Creation Tool, Update Assistant, or the ISO file, as you’ll experience errors and many other problems.
The message also includes a Learn more button that opens up the Windows 10 May 2020 Update health dashboard website, which includes the most up-to-date list of known issues with the current release.
Once the problem blocking the update on your device is resolved, you’ll see a Download and install button to upgrade to the new version.
