Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.29 removed from Windows Update due to storage and install issues

Microsoft pulls Windows 10 build 10586.29 after installation and storage issues reported by users on Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL.

Microsoft has held an event a couple of weeks ago where the company had introduced a few new devices and apart from the all new Surface Book and the Surface Pro 4, also three new smartphones had been introduced, including the Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, and Lumia 550. These phones are the first devices which ship with Windows 10 Mobile. While the operating system has not been officially released for other devices without a Windows Insider subscription yet, there is an update available to download for Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL devices, or was.

Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.29 was recently available through Windows Update for Insiders and on the new Lumia devices, which come pre-loaded with the new operating system. While the update came a bit later for the Lumia 950 series than for smartphones with a Windows Insider subscription, the update has now been pulled out completely from Windows Update.

After some users have reported a problem installing this update via the Microsoft Answers forum, Microsoft has reacted and has now removed the update for the Lumia 950 series from Windows Update. Apparently the update was not showing up for everyone, for some users the phone even said there is not enough storage left to install the update, though they had more than 15GB free on their brand new Windows Mobile device, and in some cases the update got stuck at zero percent.

Here is how Mike Mongeau, Microsoft Answers Forum Moderator, responded to these complaints:

First, we want to thank everyone for their open and candid feedback on the update experience so far. Please know we’re reading your comments and hearing you loud and clear. Your input is incredibly valuable in helping us address your questions with timely updates and fixes.

We are aware of issues related to the recently published Windows 10 Mobile update, including: update not being offered, update appearing to get stuck at 0%, and pesky low storage notifications. The team is working on fixes and improvements to the upgrade experience in the short term and with future releases. In the meantime, we have unpublished the 10586.29 update for Windows 10 Mobile from our public update servers while we work through these reports.

For those of you who still see the low storage notification: while bothersome you can safely ignore this message.

For those of you who still have pending updates (OS or apps): make sure to plug your phone into a charger and leave untouched while it works through those items.

That’s not what you’d call an ideal start for Windows 10 Mobile and the new flagship devices from Microsoft. Hopefully the company will come up with a solution for that problem very soon. Meanwhile let us know if you experienced any of the above mentioned problems with your Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL while installing build 10586.29 of Windows 10 Mobile.

Update, December 17, 2015: Microsoft addresses issues and resumes the rollout of Windows 10 build 10586.29 for mobile devices.
