Windows 11 gets new Paint app with dark mode support

Microsoft reveals a first look at the new Paint app that includes dark mode support.

After many years and failing to replace it with the Paint 3D app, Microsoft is creating a new version of its Paint app for Windows 11. In a continued effort to update the default apps to match the new design language, the company is updating Paint with a new interface that features rounded corners, new materials for the frame, and dark mode support.

The Paint app is not yet available, but Microsoft’s head of Windows and Devices, Panos Panay, teased the new design on a short Twitter video. The video revealed that the app includes a similar command bar, like the legacy version of the app already available on Windows 10. However, the experience has been redesigned with improved brushes selections, fonts, a color picker, and more. Also, the canvas now aligns to the center of the app.

Asides from the updates to the interface, the Paint app will remain the same as before. It’s unclear when the app will be available to testers, but it should not take long for Microsoft to replace it in one of the previews of Windows 11.

This is not the only app that Microsoft is updating. The company has also started testing new versions of the Calculator app with an updated design and a tweaked version of the Mail & Calendar apps. Also, it has already introduced a new Snipping Tool that merges the legacy Snipping Tool with the Snip & Sketch app, and there’s a new Alarm & Clock app that features a new “Focus Sessions” with Spotify support.
