Updated from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 10 Professional hassle free.
Operating System on SATA HDD (I know, I know)
took about 2 hours in total.
All personal files and application intact.
Automatically updated/switched to Direct X version 12
Confirmed that activated Windows 7 license no longer works. You have to buy license key

Many thanks for your reply. Pretty much what I was anticipating. Was hoping there might be a “back door” way of doing it! So I put the SSD in. Installed Win 7 and then did the upgrade which went without any problems and without having to buy a new Product Key! Just reconnected the old Win 7 HD and will delete what is not needed and will re-install programs as required. Thanks again….

Nope, your scenario is not stable.
If you’re keeping the Windows 7 drive as secondary storage, you’re not upgrading, you’re starting with clean installation. You’ll need to purchase a new license.
Unless they are portable apps, you can’t run apps from another Windows installation attached as second drive.
Also, keep in mind that the free upgrade offered finished on 2016. Although it’s likely to work, it may or may not work .

If I was you, I would backup the files. Install the SSD and install Windows 10 and try to use the Windows 7 license to activate the copy. Then wide out the Windows 7 drive, and the attach it to the computer so you can use it to restore your files and use it as secondary storage.

As for your specific question, yes, setup will let you choose where to install Windows 10, but if the setup detects another version, it’ll configure as a dual-boot system.

I have a question. I would like to fit a new SSD drive, install the Win 10 upgrade onto it and keep the existing Win 7 drive as a secondary. I’m not interested in keeping the Win 7 functional or bootable but want to keep my application s/w and files as before. I just want to try and improve the performance of the PC using the SSD for the Win10 o/s. Is the possible using the Win10 upgrade? Is there an option when doing the upgrade to specify onto which drive I want the Win 10 to install to? Thanks.

You should always create a backup of your computer and personal files before proceeding as anything can happen during and after the installation. Period. However, the upgrade process should not delete your files.
Again remember to backup your files and computer before proceeding.
