How to sync settings across devices on Windows 10

Take control of Windows 10 and sync only the settings you want across devices.

  • To manage your sync settings on Windows 10, open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and turn the Quickly access your preferences across Microsoft experiences” option on or off.
  • You can also control which settings the system will upload to the cloud and sync across devices.

UPDATED 12/12/2024: On Windows 10, if you sign in with a Microsoft account, you can sync your settings across the devices you configured with the same account.

When the feature is enabled, you can synchronize your accounts, Wi-Fi networks and passwords, language preferences, and various other settings, including printer, mouse, File Explorer settings, and notification preferences.

Microsoft added this feature because syncing your settings helps maintain a consistent experience. However, it is not for everyone, as some may want to keep configurations separate. If this is the case, Windows 10 allows you to control exactly the settings you want to keep synchronized across devices. You can even disable the feature if you want to set up your devices differently.

In this guide, I’ll teach you how to select the settings you want to sync between computers or disable it completely.

Manage sync settings on Windows 10

To enable or disable sync for your settings, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings on Windows 10.

  2. Click on Accounts.

  3. Click on Windows backup.

  4. (Option 1) Turn on the “Quickly access your preferences across Microsoft experiences” toggle switch to enable the feature.

  5. (Option 2) Turn off the “Quickly access your preferences across Microsoft experiences” toggle switch to disable the feature.

Once you complete the steps, the feature will start syncing your settings across devices. If you disabled the option, then settings won’t sync, and you will need to configure settings on each device.

Change sync settings on Windows 10

To change sync settings on Windows 10, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Click on Accounts.

  3. Click on Sync your settings.

  4. Turn on or off the toggle switch for each of the settings you want to sync:

    • Accessibility.
    • Accounts, Wi-Fi networks and passwords.
    • Personalization.
    • Language preferences and dictionary.
    • Other Windows settings.

After you complete the steps, only the settings you selected will sync across devices when using the same Microsoft account.
