Xbox mode rolls out for Windows 11 PCs with simplified branding – formerly Full Screen Experience (FSE)

Microsoft is officially rolling out the Xbox mode for PCs with the latest update for the official Xbox app for Windows 11. At the same time, the company is also changing the name from the Xbox Full Screen Experience to Xbox mode.

Previously known as the Xbox Full Screen Experience, Xbox mode was first announced at GDC and expected on Windows 11 in April 2026. The update brings an Xbox-like interface optimized for controller use, making it easier for players to access Xbox PC games as well as titles installed via Steam, Epic, and other launchers.

The experience aims to streamline gaming and boost gameplay performance in the operating system, reducing friction compared with the standard interface available through the Windows 11 desktop.

Xbox mode is a clear rebrand, offering a cleaner, more intuitive name and interface than its predecessor. While the update improves usability, some users still experience minor frustrations with the Xbox app, leading some to explore alternative tools for a smoother experience.

If you don’t see the “Xbox mode” button in the top-right of the application, you can try updating manually through the Microsoft Store.

After the update, you can configure the feature from Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience.
