Microsoft is now rolling out the Windows 11 build 22635.5170 in the Beta Channel as the update KB5055623 for version 23H2. This particular update brings some changes to File Explorer, general improvements, and fixes for the Start menu, input, and more.
It’s important to note that the company also offers preview builds in the Beta Channel for version 24H2, which includes new features and changes. The last release is build 26120.3671, and it rolls out a new option to change the Taskbar icon size, rolls out a new drag tray feature to share files more easily, improves AI features, and much more.
Windows 11 build 22635.5170 (Beta)
According to the official changes, the update KB5055623 rolls out an updated version of File Explorer that updates behavior to open folders from outside the file manager in a new tab on an existing instance of File Explorer.
For instance, if you have File Explorer open, you can launch a folder from another app or a location from the Run command. Instead of opening a new instance, the folder will open in a new tab.
In addition, the company notes that this release disables the labels for cut, copy, paste, rename, share, and delete. However, the labels are still available in version 24H2.
Microsoft is also fixing crashing problems with copying or renaming files.
Other fixes and changes
As part of the other fixes, build 22635.5170 addresses issues with the sign-out and more options in the Start menu account manager when changing the text size.
Finally, this update fixes a problem where apps may stop working after disconnecting from a remote session.
This build only includes a known issue with the Start menu, where the context menu may flash before the menu appears.
New Start menu layout
It has also been discovered that Microsoft is also porting the new Start menu layout to Windows 11 23H2 with the release of build 22635.5170.
The new Start menu offers a larger layout that allows you to fit more pins and combines the “All” menu on the same page. Also, this new design addresses one of the biggest issues with the Start menu, which is the ability to hide the “Recommended” section of the app.
However, Microsoft isn’t adding an option to turn off the feature. Instead, you have to turn off all the options that would show content in the section for the system to remove “Recommended” from the menu.
Installation process
To download and install this Windows 11 build, enroll your device in the Beta Channel through the “Windows Insider Program” settings from the “Update & Security” section. Once you enroll the computer in the program, you can download the build from the “Windows Update” settings by clicking the “Check for Updates” button, but do not turn on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option.
