UPDATED 11/30/2024: Although Microsoft has released the new version of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium, which is primarily for modern operating systems, such as Windows 10 and macOS, the company is also making it available for older versions, including Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7.
This is virtually the same version of the browser as the one available for Windows 10, as such you’ll find almost all the same features, including Internet Explorer mode for enterprise customers, but features like dark mode won’t work until future updates.
In this guide, I’ll teach you the steps to download and install the new version of Microsoft Edge on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.
Install Microsoft Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8, 8.1
To download and install Microsoft Edge on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, use these steps:
-
-
Under the “Windows” section, click the down arrow button within the “Download” button, and select the Windows 8.1, Windows 8, or Windows 7 option. (If you’re loading the site using an older version of Windows, the version will be selected automatically.)
-
Click the “Accept and download” button to save the installer on your device.
-
Double-click the MicrosoftEdgeSetup.exe to install Chromium Edge.
Once you complete the steps, the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge will install on your device running an older version of Windows.
Also, because the Chromium version of Edge uses a separate update mechanism from Windows Update, Microsoft can update the browser as soon as the new changes are available for all supported versions, including for all versions of Windows and macOS.
