Surface devices lifecycle details

Although you can continue to use a Surface device until it breaks or you get a replacement, they do have a lifecycle similar to every version of Windows 10. In the case of the Surface line, the lifecycle starts when Microsoft releases the device and ends when firmware and driver support reach the end of service.

According to the company’s documentation, Surface devices usually have four years of firmware and driver support from the date it was initially released (not from the date you purchased the device). However, sometimes, the support will continue beyond four years, but if this was the case, Microsoft will communicate a new end of service in advance.

For example, in the case of the Surface Pro 7, the support begins on October 22, 2019, and it ends four years later, on October 22, 2023. Surface Pro X starts on November 5, 2019, and ends on November 5, 2023, and Surface Laptop Go starts on October 13, 2020, and ends on October 13, 2024.

In addition to the driver and firmware support, there’s also the support that the company provides for the operating system during the lifecycle. According to the support documentation, updates will be offered for the version of Windows 10 released in the prior 30 months. However, Surface won’t support versions that were launched prior to the release of the device. You can check this support page to learn which version of Windows 10 are supported for every Surface.

Also, when the support period ends, Surface devices will continue to receive maintenance and feature updates for as long as the operating system is supported.
