You're sharing your data with ChatGPT by default, here's how to stop it.

  • OpenAI uses your ChatGPT conversations to train its AI models. You can disable this under Settings > Data Controls > toggle off “Improve the model for everyone.”
  • For ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, and API users, data is not used for training by default.

OpenAI, by default, records and uses your conversations with ChatGPT to train its AI models, whether you use the chatbot on the web or with the Windows 11 app. Something, you may or may not know already. However, what you probably didn’t know (because they don’t want you to turn it off) is that at any time, you can disable this functionality to protect your privacy a little more.

The feature is only turned on by default for the consumer version of ChatGPT, Codex, and Sore. However, OpenAI doesn’t use data from users for AI training purposes for ChatGPT Team, ChatGPT Enterprise, and the API.

In this guide, I’ll outline the steps to prevent ChatGPT from using data from future conversations to train the AI models from OpenAI.

Disable personal data for AI training in ChatGPT

To prevent OpenAI ChatGPT from using your data in conversations for AI training, follow these steps:

  1. Open your ChatGPT account.

  2. Click on your profile and select the Settings option.

    ChatGPT open settings

  3. Click on Data controls.

  4. Click the “Improve the model for everyone” option.

  5. Turn off the “Improve the model for everyone” toggle switch.

  6. Click the Done button.

Once you complete the steps, OpenAI will no longer use your content to train the ChatGPT AI models.

This configuration won’t remove your chat history in ChatGPT. If you use “Temporary Chat” (incognito mode), chats will not appear in history and will be deleted after 30 days.

In addition to blocking the company from using your data for AI training, it’s also recommended that you check and remove the chats you have chosen to share publicly to prevent search engines, such as Google, from indexing those conversations.
