Builds 29558 and 28020.1797 for Windows 11 arrive in the Canary Channel

Microsoft rolls out Windows 11 builds with console improvements and fixes.

Microsoft is releasing Windows 11 build 29558 for version 27H2 and Windows 11 build 28020.1797 (KB5079490) for version 26H1 in the Canary Channel, delivering another incremental update with a new new features and fixes.

According to the official changelog“Windows 11 Insider Preview Quality Update (29558), the classic Command Prompt is no longer updated as a standalone component. Instead, Microsoft is now integrating improvements directly from the open‑source Windows Terminal project on GitHub.

In this release, a large batch of Windows Terminal enhancements is rolling into the legacy Console Host. The update introduces an optional Direct3D rendering path, faster scrolling performance, bold‑font support, and a more reliable paste system. The Find dialog now supports regular expressions, and the console gains Sixel image rendering, allowing tools like Windows Package Manager (winget) to display inline icons.

Accessibility also gets a significant overhaul with rewritten MSAA/UIA support and redesigned pop‑up dialogs, including the F7 history window. Clipboard handling is more robust thanks to OSC 52 support and fixes for Alt‑code input issues. WSL and PowerShell users will see more consistent snap‑on‑input behavior, and rectangular selection now works correctly again.

The company is also fixing problems with authentication and performance on the “Power & Battery” settings page, and the Check Disk command now supports specifying volumes with spaces if the path is enclosed in quotes.

This update also fixed an unexpected error message when opening the Group Policy Editor.

As part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview build 28020.1797, the company is only shipping a small scope of improvements and fixes to improve the overall experience.

It’s important to clarify that Windows 11 26H1 is not a feature update for existing devices. The software giant has explicitly confirmed that version 26H1 is not an upgrade path for computers running Windows 11 25H2 or any earlier release.

This release is designed exclusively for new ARM64 hardware and will ship only on next-generation computers, starting with devices powered by Snapdragon X2 Plus, Elite, and Extreme processors. Systems based on Intel or AMD platforms will never receive Windows 11 26H1 through Windows Update or any other supported upgrade channel.

To download and install this Windows 11 build, enroll your devices in the Canary Channel through the “Windows Insider Program” settings from the “Update & Security” section. Once you enroll the computer in the program, you can download the build from the “Windows Update” settings by turning on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option and clicking the “Check for Updates” button.
