Microsoft is quietly expanding Windows 11’s Low Latency Profile to app launches with the August 2026 Security Update, potentially making programs open faster on lower-end devices. The change arrives with the update  KB5121003 (build 26200.9168), although the company hasn’t made a big deal about it.

Low Latency Profile first rolled out more broadly with the June 2026 Security Update, but it was limited mainly to some system components such as the Start menu, Windows Search, and other surfaces. The August update expands the CPU boost to apps (according to Windows Latest), which could make the operating system feel more responsive during everyday use.

Apps can now get a short performance boost

Low Latency Profile is part of the broader Windows K2 initiative. The feature works by briefly pushing the processor to its maximum frequency for one to three seconds whenever the system detects a high-priority interaction, then returning to normal operation.

The idea is known as “race to sleep,” and many users perceive performance improvements during short interactions rather than sustained workloads. By optimizing those quick responsiveness moments, Microsoft can make Windows 11 feel noticeably faster without significantly increasing heat output or battery consumption.

In a test conducted by Windows Latest, installing the update KB5121003 showed the difference. Apps launched faster with Low Latency Profile enabled, including common programs such as Notepad, Calculator, Chrome, PowerPoint, VLC, and others.

The improvement isn’t about making every app dramatically faster. It’s about reducing the short pause between clicking an app and seeing it actually open. On slower hardware, those small delays can make Windows 11 feel noticeably less responsive.

Microsoft is bringing the boost beyond Windows 11 itself

This is a relatively small change, but it fits into Microsoft’s larger effort to improve Windows 11 performance.

Low Latency Profile was already being used for core parts of Windows 11. Extending it to applications means the optimization now applies to one of the most common things users do on a computer.

It also makes more sense for lower-end systems. A powerful desktop may already launch most apps quickly enough that the difference is difficult to notice. A budget laptop or older hardware has much more to gain from the operating system responding aggressively during short bursts of activity.

Low Latency Profile is still rolling out

If you install the update KB5121003 (build 26200.9168), it doesn’t necessarily mean every computer has the CPU boost immediately. Microsoft is using a gradual rollout, so some systems will receive the feature later.

Although this feature doesn’t have user-facing controls, the most effective method to check is to watch processor frequency while launching an application by installing the HWiNFO app. A brief jump toward the processor’s higher clock speeds indicates that Windows 11 is applying the boost.

Microsoft’s approach also avoids keeping the processor running at high performance continuously. The test found no measurable battery or thermal penalty from the short bursts, which is important for laptops.

I like this direction because it tackles one of the things that can make Windows 11 feel slow even when the device itself is perfectly usable. Those little pauses when opening an app. A one- or two-second delay doesn’t sound like much on paper, but when it happens dozens of times a day, you’ll notice.

In my opinion, this is a better use of Microsoft’s performance work than simply chasing higher benchmark numbers. Giving the CPU a short boost when I actually need it makes more sense than keeping the system in a high-performance state all the time, especially on laptops.

I wouldn’t expect this to suddenly make an older computer feel new, though. The improvement is still measured in small bursts, and faster hardware will naturally make it harder to notice. However, if the company can keep finding these small ways to make Windows 11 respond faster without trading away battery life or thermals, that’s the kind of work I want to see more of.
