The preview of Windows 11 26H2 (2026 Update) is available for testing through the Windows Insider Program starting August 27, 2026. If you want to install the feature update before Microsoft makes it generally available, you can enroll a compatible device in the Windows Insider Program and use Windows Update to download the preview.
Windows 11 26H2 is the fourth major feature update for Windows 11. However, because version 26H2 shares the same underlying system platform as versions 25H2 and 24H2, the upgrade isn’t expected to introduce a large number of new features or require a full operating system reinstallation. Instead, Microsoft is using an enablement package to activate features and improvements already present in the operating system but currently dormant.
The company is expected to deliver Windows 11 26H2 as a regular feature update later in 2026. Installing the preview through the Windows Insider Program lets you test the upcoming release ahead of its public rollout, but you should keep in mind that preview builds can contain bugs, compatibility issues, and unfinished features.

Upgrade to Windows 11 26H2 from Insider Program
To upgrade to Windows 11 26H2 early from version 25H2 or 24H2, follow these steps:

Open Settings on Windows 11.

Click on Windows Update.

Click the Windows Insider Program page.

Click the Get started button.

Click the “Continue” button to join the program with your currently logged-in Microsoft account.
Quick note: You may need to click the “Edit” button to select a Microsoft account. -
Click the Continue button.

Click the Advanced options button.

Turn on the “Show Release Preview” toggle switch.

Select the “Release Preview” option under the “Select your experience” section.

Click the Restart button.

Open Settings after the reboot.

Click on Windows Update.

Turn on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle switch.

Click the “Check for updates” button.

Windows 11 build 26200.9278 (25H2), build 26100.9278 (24H2), or a higher release will be installed on the computer (if applicable).

Click the Restart now button.

Open Settings after the reboot.

Click on Windows Update.

Click the “Check for updates” button.

Click the “Download & install” option for “Windows 11, version 26H2 is available”.

Click the Restart now button.
Once the device is out of the program, it’ll continue to receive regular updates for as long as this version is supported.
Pureinfotech’s Take
I’m not in a rush to put Windows 11 26H2 on my main computer just because Microsoft has made the preview available. I’ve seen enough releases over the years to know that getting an update early and getting a good update are two different things.
For enthusiasts and anyone who likes testing the operating system, though, 26H2 is worth watching. The fact that the company can build on the existing platform also means I’m not expecting the kind of disruption that comes with a major overhaul. That makes the preview a little easier to approach, as long as you’re comfortable dealing with the occasional problem that comes with Insider builds.
Personally, I’d test it on a secondary device before making it the daily driver. There’s simply not enough here to justify taking unnecessary risks on a machine you depend on every day.
