Instead of introducing a completely new platform, the company is delivering version 26H2 through an enablement package for devices already running Windows 11 version 25H2 and 24H2. These versions share the same core system and servicing branch, which means the upgrade is much smaller than a traditional feature update.
This also means that many of the features and improvements associated with version 26H2 have already been delivered through regular cumulative updates. The enablement package essentially activates the new version, changes the version number from 25H2 to 26H2, and resets the support cycle.

Release date for version 26H2
The official release date of Windows 11 26H2 is September 29, 2026. The feature update is now available through Windows Update for compatible devices running Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2. Microsoft is gradually rolling out the update, so not every computer will see the option immediately.

What are the new features on Windows 11 26H2?
According to Microsoft, Windows 11 26H2 introduces new AI-powered experiences, including an Agent in Settings to find and manage settings with natural language, richer image descriptions in Narrator, new Task Manager monitoring for AI workloads and NPU activity, and new Taskbar experiences for accessing AI tools and tracking tasks.
The company also notes that it’s adding more personalization options to the Start menu and Taskbar. Users can choose different Start menu sizes, hide their profile picture and account name, control the visibility of individual sections, move the Taskbar to different positions on the screen, and use a more compact Taskbar layout.
Windows Search and File Explorer receive improvements for finding content and managing files, while accessibility gets expanded Voice Access language support, improved voice recognition in noisy environments, enhanced Magnifier controls, and richer image descriptions in Narrator.
Other improvements include better Windows Share integration, enhanced Android phone and Windows PC experiences, expanded Windows Hello fingerprint support, improved Smart App Control, Shared Audio, Multi-App Camera, a simplified Basic Camera mode, more focused Widgets notifications, gaming and Xbox improvements, and better networking reliability.

Updated hardware requirements
Windows 11 26H2 doesn’t introduce new hardware requirements for computers already running a supported installation of Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2.
If your computer already runs version 25H2 and meets Microsoft’s requirements, it remains compatible with version 26H2.
Supported hardware still requires a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4GB of memory, 64GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0.
The processor must also support the POPCNT instruction, a requirement associated with the Windows 11 24H2 platform.
If your computer already runs a supported version of Windows 11, you shouldn’t need to buy new hardware just to upgrade from 25H2 to 26H2.
Windows 11 26H2 upgrade process
Microsoft is releasing version 26H2 as an enablement package for computers running Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2.
This makes Windows Update the easiest way to upgrade. You only need to open Settings > Windows Update, enable the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option, and click the “Check for updates” button.

You can also use Rufus to create bootable installation media when you need an alternative installation method.
After installing the update, you can verify that version 26H2 has been applied correctly by going to Settings > System > About and checking the “Windows specifications” section.
Can you install Windows 11 26H2 on unsupported hardware?
Microsoft doesn’t officially support installing Windows 11 on hardware that doesn’t meet its minimum requirements.
However, users can still install Windows 11 on unsupported computers using modified installation media and other workarounds.
