Surface Laptop Ultra owners report lag, stuttering, and unexpected restarts

Microsoft's premium laptop is facing complaints about sluggish performance and system stability, while reviewers have also reported lag and other bugs.

  • Surface Laptop Ultra owners report sluggish performance, stuttering, freezes, and unexpected restarts.
  • Reviews from The Verge, PCWorld, and Windows Central also reported lag, slow restarts, and other software issues.
  • NVIDIA is looking into reports of lag, but the cause remains unknown, and the available reports do not show that every device is affected or that all symptoms share one cause.

The Surface Laptop Ultra running the latest version of Windows 11 is facing questions about performance and reliability after owners complain and reviews report similar problems.

Some owners describe stuttering during everyday tasks, while others report freezes and unexpected restarts. The complaints raise questions about the experience buyers can expect from Microsoft’s most expensive Surface laptop.

The complaints follow reviews that also revealed performance problems and other bugs. NVIDIA is reportedly investigating at least some owner reports, but the cause remains unclear.

The reports are worth watching because the Surface Laptop Ultra is designed for demanding workloads, including software development, creative work, gaming, and running AI models locally. Prices start at $2,599.99, with higher-end configurations costing considerably more.

Surface Laptop Ultra owners report sluggish performance and crashes

The discussion gained attention after users began sharing their experiences on Reddit. In a thread titled Surface Ultra impressions, one owner said the laptop felt slow and stuttery compared with a desktop computer and questioned whether other ARM-based Windows 11 laptops behaved the same way.

Other owners described similar problems. One said the laptop felt less smooth and responsive than their other Surface devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, with occasional stuttering during everyday tasks such as browsing the web, watching Netflix, and navigating File Explorer.

A separate user on X reported kernel-power events followed by unexpected restarts. This is a different symptom from the sluggishness and stuttering Warren and other users described.

These reports don’t show how widespread the problems are or whether they share the same cause. However, they suggest that the complaints extend beyond a single user’s experience.

Tom Warren reported on X that NVIDIA was looking into the lag after more Surface Laptop Ultra owners began reporting similar behavior. However, it does not establish that the company has identified a driver problem or confirmed a hardware defect.

Reviewers have also encountered performance problems

The owner complaints follow similar observations from reviewers who tested the Surface Laptop Ultra before its release.

In his Surface Laptop Ultra review for The Verge, Tom Warren reported occasional lag and noticeable display ghosting. He has noticed trails when moving windows quickly and found that switching the power setting from Best Power Efficiency to Best Performance seemed to reduce much of the sluggishness.

Warren also encountered loud pops from the built-in speakers and unusually slow restarts. Rebooting seemed to resolve the speaker issue, though he had to do it more than once.

PCWorld’s Surface Laptop Ultra review revealed more serious problems during initial testing. For example, apps crashed or failed to load, some tasks ran extremely slowly, and Windows Media Player froze during battery testing.

Microsoft suggested that PCWorld might have received a defective review unit. The publication also noted that the problems disappeared after the reviewer installed a security update, although the reviewer could not determine exactly what resolved them.

Windows Central’s Surface Laptop Ultra review also identified an unusually long restart time. The reviewer (Zac Bowden) said the software giant was looking into the issue and found that the default power profile could significantly reduce performance compared with higher-performance settings.

Reviewers and owners have reported slow performance and stability problems. However, it’s unclear whether all these issues have the same cause or affect every Surface Laptop Ultra.

Battery power and Windows settings could be part of the problem

One detail from Warren’s follow-up on X could help narrow down the issue. When asked whether the lag occurred while the laptop was plugged in or running on battery, he replied that it appeared to happen mostly on battery power.

This observation is important because Windows 11 adjusts power consumption and performance based on the selected power mode and whether the computer is plugged in.

However, the available reports do not establish that battery operation causes the stuttering. Graphics drivers, display behavior, firmware, and other software issues could also contribute to the symptoms.

The Surface Laptop Ultra uses NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform, built around the N1X system-on-chip, which combines an Arm-based CPU with Blackwell graphics. The new hardware platform also introduces a different software environment for Windows apps, including some that may require emulation or additional compatibility work.

The reported problems could affect the entire system or only certain apps, drivers, or graphics tasks.

For now, there is not enough evidence to determine whether NVIDIA’s graphics drivers, Windows 11, or a hardware issue is responsible for the reported lag, freezes, and unexpected restarts.

NVIDIA is reportedly investigating, but the cause remains unknown

Warren said on X on October 22 that NVIDIA was looking into the lag he had described in his review, noting that more Surface Laptop Ultra owners were beginning to report similar behavior.

His follow-up indicated that the problem appeared to occur mostly on battery power. However, neither observation nor owner reports provide a confirmed explanation.

The reports also describe different symptoms. Sluggish interface animations, display ghosting, app crashes, hard freezes, and unexpected restarts may have different causes, even if they occur on the same device.

It remains unclear whether a driver or firmware update will address the complaints, whether some devices have individual defects, or whether the problems are related to the new platform’s power management and software compatibility.

Microsoft’s reported investigation into slow restarts and NVIDIA’s reported investigation into lag should also be treated as separate developments unless the companies establish a connection.

A premium laptop needs to deliver consistent performance

The Surface Laptop Ultra offers powerful graphics capabilities, substantial unified memory options, and hardware aimed at developers and creative professionals. However, those specifications are only part of the experience.

Would these reports make you think twice about buying the Surface Laptop Ultra?

At this price, a laptop should feel responsive for everyday tasks, stay stable under normal workloads, and deliver predictable performance on battery power.

The early reports do not establish that the Surface Laptop Ultra is broadly unreliable, and the review findings also show that some initial problems disappeared after a software update. However, the similarities between the owner complaints and some reviewer observations make the situation worth monitoring.

For prospective buyers, the key question is whether Microsoft and NVIDIA can fix the reported problems through software updates and deliver the consistent experience expected from a premium Windows laptop.

For now, the cause remains unconfirmed, and further testing or an official statement from Microsoft or NVIDIA will be needed to establish whether these reports point to a common issue.
