Microsoft is rolling out a refreshed version of the Windows Security app with visual improvements designed to make it feel more at home on Windows 11. The update modernizes several interface elements, including navigation, layouts, controls, and typography, while keeping the familiar experience largely intact.

According to the company’s latest Windows Security release notes for October 2026, the refreshed experience is rolling out with version 1000.29680.0.1000 through the Windows Insider Program.

The changes focus primarily on improving the app’s visual consistency with Windows 11 and other built-in experiences, such as Settings.

Microsoft says pages throughout Windows Security now feature more consistent layouts and navigation, with improved behavior across different window sizes. The company has also refreshed controls, dialogs, status indicators, typography, spacing, and colors.

The goal is to make the experience feel more cohesive when navigating the different security sections and managing protection settings.

The update also improves how the app presents security information and available actions, making it easier to understand device protection status and identify what needs attention.

Beyond the visual changes, the company is improving how Windows Security displays device security information on supported managed devices. Details will now load progressively, so available information appears sooner. The company has also improved progress indicators, error handling, refresh behavior, and performance monitoring.

In addition to the interface refresh, Microsoft is also adding a new setting to manage the Administrator Protection feature from the “Account protection” section.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t a complete redesign of Windows Security. The app retains its familiar interface and overall organization. Instead, Microsoft is refreshing existing elements to bring the experience closer to the design language used throughout Windows 11.

Windows Security remains an important part of Windows 11, bringing together Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Windows Firewall, Smart App Control, and other protection features. While its security capabilities continue to receive updates, its interface has needed more visual attention to keep pace with the rest of the operating system.

For now, the refreshed experience is available to Windows Insiders running version 1000.29680.0.1000. Microsoft hasn’t announced a general availability date.
