Windows 10 build 10122: Hands-on with the Start menu, Settings, apps, and new features (video)

Here is what's new in Windows 10 build 10122.

Microsoft recently rolled out a new preview of Windows 10 (build 10122), but because of a significant bug that causes Microsoft Edge to crash frequently on systems using AMD graphics, the company opted to release the new build via the Fast ring of updates. However, build 10122 includes a number of improvements on the Start menu, Continuum, Microsoft’s new Edge web browser, which the company still refers it as “Project Spartan”, and the new preview also includes a new Insider Hub app.

Start menu

  • New File Explorer and Settings buttons located at the bottom of the menu
  • Ability to add a third column of Live Tiles
  • Full screen button has now moved to the Personalization page, under the Start area
  • On tablet mode Live Tiles get bigger
  • Left pane on the Start screen while in full screen or Tablet mode has to be access with the hamburger button located in the top-left corner of the screen

Cortana

  • Cortana gets the new dark theme

Microsoft Edge

  • Microsoft Edge browser now has the ability to pin web page to Start
  • There is a New Tab page with top site and suggested content
  • There is a new InPrivate mode
  • The browser now saves passwords and forms
  • Reading view icon has a new animation
  • There are various changes under the hood that make Edge render web page better

Apps

  • The Music and Video app have been removed and the Music Preview and Video Preview have been renamed to Music and Video
  • There is a new Insider Hub app
  • Microsoft updated its MSN apps with a new fresh UI

Settings

  • Main content in Settings now appeared center in the app
  • The back button has been moved to the title bar
  • Personalization gets a new Start area to configure setting about the Start menu, such as full screen mode
  • Privacy has a new Motion area to let Windows and apps use motion data and collect motion history
  • In the Advanced options under Windows Update there is a new “Delay upgrades (no recommended)” option
  • Update & security has a new link to Backup and Restore (Windows 7) feature

Global changes

  • In Windows 10 build 10122, Microsoft makes it easier to set default apps
  • The pill switch and slider switch gets updated
  • The title bar in File Explorer now has a white background
  • The new white context menu appears throughout the operating
