Beginners: How to export and import bookmarks in Firefox

Firefox - Export Import bookmarks

This how-to article will teach you how to manually export and import bookmarks in Firefox.

Firefox has the ability to automatically generate backups of your bookmarks and it saves the last ten for safekeeping, but you also have the option to export and import your bookmarks off your computer, which is an even better option in case that something goes wrong in your computer and you lose data, you’ll still able to recover.

Follow these steps to export/backup your Firefox bookmarks:

1.  While in Firefox, click the orange Firefox button in the top-left corner of the window and navigate through Bookmarks, and select Show All Bookmarks (alternatively use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+B).

Firefox - Show all bookmarks

2.  In the bookmark’s manager — Library –, click on Import and Backup. Here you have several choices:
  • The Backup option will save all of your bookmarks that can only be restored in Firefox.
  • The Restore option will allow you to restore bookmarks from a backup file or from automatic backups created by Firefox.
  • Import HTML option allows you to import bookmarks from a HTML file that you exported from Firefox or another web browser.
  • Export HTML option allows you to export bookmarks for you to have another form of backup or to import them to another web browser.

For this how-to, I am going to choose the Export HTML, then just browse for a location where to save the file and click Save. That’s it!

To import the bookmarks back into Firefox follow the same steps, but choose either the Restore or Import HTML options depending on the kind of backup you have created.

Important: Restoring bookmarks from a backup will overwrite your current bookmarks in Firefox with the ones in the backup file.

You can also use the Sync service from Firefox that not only will backup your bookmarks, but it will keep them safe in the Cloud and you will be able to save other settings like passwords, tabs, history, and more.
