  • KB5068221 for Windows 11 Out-of-band update released on September 22, 2025, to fix a bug running the Office apps in the App-V environment.
  • The problem only affects Windows 11 24H2. Other versions were not affected.
  • Microsoft is also updating many of the AI components on version 24H2.

Microsoft is now releasing the Out-of-Band (OOB) update KB5068221, build 26100.6588, for Windows 11 24H2 to address a bug that prevented users from running Microsoft Office applications in Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) environments.

According to the company, the problem was due to a double-handle closure in the AppVEntSubsystems32 or AppVEntSubsystems64 system component.

In addition, this release updates AI components, including Image Search (1.2508.906.0), Content Extraction (1.2508.906.0), Semantic Analysis (1.2508.906.0), and Settings Model (1.2508.906.0).

The update bumps the version number from build 26100.6584 to 26100.6588, and since this is a cumulative update, it also includes the fixes and features rolling out with the September 2025 Security Update.

On September 9, 2025, the company began rolling out the latest Patch Tuesday update for every supported version of the operating system, featuring new features, changes, and fixes, including the ability to show a clock in the Notification Center and customize widgets in the Lock Screen. This update also introduces visual changes when using Windows Hello, as well as in the Settings app, and many more enhancements.

Now, the company is quickly making available the Out-of-band update KB5068221 to address the issue on affected devices.

Windows 11 update KB5068221

  • Release date: September 22, 2025.
  • Builds: 26100.6588.
  • Purpose: Fixes virtualization bug with Office apps.
  • Affected versions: Windows 11 24H2.
  • Not affected: Windows 11 23H2.

If you have a computer running the affected version of the operating system, you should install this update immediately by going to Settings > Windows Update and clicking the “Check for updates” button.

Alternatively, you can download and install the update KB5068221 from the Microsoft Update Catalog for Windows 11.

As part of the known issues, the company notes that installing the updates KB5068221 or KB5065426 will cause the connection to shared files and folders using the Server Message Block (SMB) v1 protocol over NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) to fail. A workaround is to allow network traffic on TCP port 445 until the company provides a permanent solution.

Out-of-band (OOB) updates explained

Out-of-band updates are emergency patches released outside the regular monthly schedule. Microsoft issues them to address urgent problems (such as newly discovered security flaws or critical bugs) that can’t wait for the next Patch Tuesday.

These updates are cumulative, meaning they include all previous fixes (security and non-security) plus the new targeted resolution.
