- Auto SR uses AI upscaling to improve visuals and smoothness on Windows 11 when docked.
- The feature is currently in preview for Xbox Insiders and requires specific setup steps.
- Only works when connected to an external display, not in handheld mode.
- Best results come from running games at 720p before upscaling.
- Requires the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) due to NPU dependency.
You can enable Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) on ROG Xbox Ally X for Docked Play, and in this guide, I’ll outline the steps to complete this task.
On Windows 11, Auto SR is an upsizing feature that makes games look sharper and play smoother. The feature is available when docked and connected to an external display, and, according to the company, delivers 1440p-like detail in addition to smooth framerates on larger screens.
At the time of this writing, Auto SR is available as a preview for Xbox Insiders on the ROG Xbox Ally X. As part of the preview, Microsoft is also integrating the setting into the Game Bar experience in addition to the option available in the Settings app.
In this guide, I’ll outline the steps to enable the Auto SR feature on your ASUS Xbox Ally X gaming handhelds.

Once you complete the steps, Auto SR will be enabled for games when you dock the gaming handheld and it’s connected to an external display.
One of the best additions to this preview is the ability to see whether the AI is actually working in real time. Since Auto SR runs on the NPU, it can be hard to tell if the sharpening is active just by looking at the screen.
Open the Game Bar (Windows key + G), open the Auto SR tab in the “Display” widget, and turn on the “Show in-game status indicator” toggle switch.
Microsoft notes that since the feature is still in preview, every “PC game behaves a little differently, and there’s no one-size-fits-all setup,” and “you might notice minor quirks along the way.”
When to use Auto SR on the Ally X
Auto SR is most effective in games running at 60 FPS or lower. If performance is already smooth, you can use it to increase resolution or graphics settings for sharper visuals without sacrificing frame rates.
Currently, the company is suggesting to try this feature on Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Assetto Corsa, Avowed, Control, Dead Island: Definitive Edition, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Far Cry 6, Frostpunk 2, Grounded 2, Psychonauts 2, Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Outer Worlds 2, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, or War Thunder.
The “Docked-Only” Requirement
The biggest point of confusion for many users will be finding the Auto SR toggle missing or greyed out. It is important to note that Automatic Super Resolution on the ROG Ally X is currently hard-locked to external displays.
The feature will not appear as an option if you are playing in handheld mode. To enable the AI upscaling, the device must be docked and connected to a monitor or TV.
Furthermore, Microsoft has introduced a “seamless docking” behavior specifically for this preview: when you connect to an external display, the Ally X screen will automatically turn off. This isn’t a bug. It’s a deliberate optimization to ensure the NPU and GPU resources are fully dedicated to powering the game and the AI upscaling on the larger screen.
Auto SR Resolution Sweet Spots
While the system promises “1440p-like” detail, the AI requires a specific starting point to work its magic. If your in-game resolution is set too high, Auto SR simply won’t engage.
For the best results on the Ally X, your in-game resolution must be set to 1280 x 720 (720p). Also, technically, Auto SR can process images between 700p and 900p (vertical lines). However, 720p is the “sweet spot” that provides the most consistent AI upscaling quality without overloading the NPU.
When you feed a 720p signal into the Auto SR engine while docked, the system intelligently reconstructs the image to output a sharp, high-fidelity signal—typically matching a 1440p target—on your external monitor or TV.
Always ensure your game is running in Exclusive Fullscreen or Windowed Borderless mode at 720p. If the game is set to your monitor’s native 4K or 1440p resolution internally, the Auto SR feature will remain inactive because there is nothing left to upscale.
Only for ROG Xbox Ally X
Only the ROG Xbox Ally X (the 2025 refresh) supports Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR).
The original 2023 ROG Ally (Z1 / Z1 Extreme) does NOT support Auto SR because it has no NPU. Auto SR requires an NPU to run the larger AI upscaling models in parallel with the GPU.
