Edge enable Copilot Mode

How to enable or disable Copilot Mode for Microsoft Edge on Windows 11

Microsoft rolls out Copilot Mode, and here's how you can enable (or disable) it on your Edge browser.

  • To enable Copilot Mode on Microsoft Edge, open the feature’s webpage, and turn on “Copilot Mode.”
  • To disable Copilot Mode, open the edge://settings/ai page and toggle the “Copilot Mode” setting.
  • You can also control the feature by configuring the edge://flags/#edge-copilot-mode and edge://flags/#edge-ntp-composer experimental settings.
  • You’ll need Edge version 138 or higher on Windows 11 (or 10).

Microsoft Edge is now becoming an AI browser with the introduction of Copilot Mode. This new experimental feature is supposed to help you surf the web more easily with a little assistant using AI, and in this guide, I’ll outline the steps to enable or disable the feature.

Copilot Mode is currently an opt-in feature for Microsoft Edge version 138 and higher releases. Once it’s enabled, the “New Tab” page for Edge will be replaced with the Copilot experience that you’re already familiar with in the Windows 11 app and web version of the chatbot.

Also, the “Copilot” button will now appear in the address bar on the top-left corner of the browser. When you click on it, you will get a flyout with a prompt box to ask the chatbot anything you need.

The key features of Copilot Mode are that the chatbot can now see all your open tabs and understand the contents to help you compare, decide, and take actions faster.

In future updates, the experience will be able to work as an AI agent to book reservations and perform specific tasks on a website by simply asking for the action using natural language.

Furthermore, it’ll also be aware of your search history to offer related content (websites and videos) that you might be interested in automatically.

In this guide, I’ll outline the steps to turn Copilot Mode on or off on Microsoft Edge for Windows 11 (and 10).

Enable Copilot Mode on Microsoft Edge

To turn on the new Copilot Mode for the Edge browser, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.

  2. Open this Microsoft page.

  3. Turn on the Copilot Mode toggle switch.

    Enable Edge Copilot Mode

Quick note: The option to enable the feature through the “AI Innovations” page won’t be available until you turn on this toggle.

When I was trying to enable this feature, initially, the toggle switch wasn’t working. However, it worked after clicking on it multiple times.

Enable Copilot Mode from the flags page

You can also enable the feature by following these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.

  2. Open the “flags” page to enable the experimental feature manually:

    edge://flags/#edge-copilot-mode

    Edge Flags enable Copilot Mode

  3. Set the “Edge Copilot Mode” setting to Default (or Enabled).

Quick tip: If the “Default” option didn’t work, then try the “Enabled” option.
  4. Open the following settings on the “flags” page:

    edge://flags/#edge-ntp-composer
  5. Set the ” CMFeature: Unified Composer NTP” setting to Default (or Enabled) to turn on the Copilot New Tab page.

  6. Click the Restart button.

Once you complete the steps, you should be able to access the Copilot Mode feature in the default browser for Windows 11.

It’s important to note that the setting in the “flags” page may only work after enabling the feature through the official web page.

Disable Copilot Mode on Microsoft Edge

To turn off Copilot Mode on Microsoft Edge, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.

  2. Open the AI Innovations settings page:

    edge://settings/ai
  3. Turn off the Copilot Mode toggle switch.

After you complete the steps, the feature will be disabled, but the settings will remain on the page.

Disable Copilot Mode from the flags page

Alternatively, you can disable the feature entirely, following these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.

  2. Open the “flags” page to disable the experimental feature manually:

    edge://flags/#edge-copilot-mode
  3. Set the “Edge Copilot Mode” setting to “Disabled” to turn off the feature.

  4. Open the following settings on the “flags” page:

    edge://flags/#edge-ntp-composer
  5. Set the ” CMFeature: Unified Composer NTP” setting to “Disabled” to turn off the Copilot New Tab page.

  6. Click the Restart button.

Once you complete the steps, the feature will no longer be available in the web browser.

If you change your mind, you can use the above instructions to reconfigure the feature on Microsoft Edge.
