  • Windows 10 receives the update KB5048652 (build 19045.5247 and 19044.5247) as the December 2024 update.
  • The security update only addresses a few problems, and there are no new features.

The December 2024 update, which includes several security fixes and improvements, is now rolling out Windows 10 22H2 and 21H2 as the security update KB5048652 (build 19045.5247 and 19044.5247).

According to the official changes (you can find more details about the Beta and Release Preview Channels and from the preview originally available in the Stable Channel on these Microsoft support pages), the update ports advertisements from apps from the Microsoft Store to the “Recommended” section of the Start menu. If you don’t want to see these recommendations, you can turn off the “Show suggestions occasionally in Start” option from Settings > Personalization > Start.

The update KB5048652 also rolls out fixes for App list backup, Copy cloud files, motherboard replacement not activating, Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA), and Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) printer.

This update was originally available as build 19045.5194, then it became build 19045.5198, and it’s now available in the Stable Channel as preview build 19045.5247 with the same KB number.

Older versions of Windows 10

In addition, Microsoft is releasing updates available for older operating system versions, including 1809, 1607, and 1507. For example, the company is rolling out the update KB5048661 for version 1809, bumping the build number to 17763.6659 with some fixes, including a fix for activation after replacing the motherboard.

Windows 10 1607 receives the update KB5048671, which bumps the version to build 14393.7606 and resolves a number of miscellaneous problems with the operating system.

Finally, Windows 10 1507 is getting the update KB5048703, which increases the version to build 10240.20857 and introduces some security fixes.

Cumulative update installation

If you want to download and install Windows 10 build 19045.5131, you can force the update from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, turn on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle switch and click the “Check for updates” button.

If you prefer manually installing the December 2024 update for Windows 10 22H2 and 21H2, download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

If you encounter issues after applying this cumulative update, you can uninstall it using these instructions to revert to the previous version of the operating system.

In addition to the Patch Tuesday update for Windows 10, Microsoft is also updating Windows 11 24H2 and 23H2.
