  • The Windows 11 build 26220.7653 (KB5074157) adds small dark mode improvements and brings new image file support for desktop backgrounds.
  • This update also introduces improvements to existing features, including for Taskbar, Start menu, Xbox FSE, and more.

Microsoft has released Windows 11 build 26220.7653 as the update KB5074157 for version 25H2 through the Beta Channel of the Windows Insider Program. This preview introduces dark mode improvements for the Settings and adds support for new image formats to be set as a desktop background.

In addition, the “Windows 11 Insider Preview Quality Update (26220.7653)” rolls out fixes for the Taskbar, Start menu, Bluetooth, Xbox Full Screen Experience for PC, Lock Screen, and Settings.

At the same time, the company also notes known issues for Click to Do, Taskbar, Xbox Full Screen Experience, and graphics.

It’s worth noting that the update KB5074157 is only available in the Beta Channel for version 25H2, as the company plans to start releasing preview builds in the Dev Channel for version 26H2. If you have a device on the Dev Channel, it’s important to switch to the Beta Channel before installing the latest preview to continue receiving improvements in this branch. Once the company switches the Dev Channel to a higher build, it won’t be possible to switch without a full reinstallation.

Other fixes and changes

In addition to the new features and improvements, Windows 11 build 26220.7653 ships various fixes, including:

  • Taskbar: Fixed an issue where the autohide Taskbar could appear prematurely and block interaction at the bottom of the screen, and resolved a recent problem where Start menu, notification center, and quick settings wouldn’t open on click, even though their keyboard shortcuts still worked.
  • Start menu: Resolved a memory leak when opening Start, corrected the menu opening on the wrong side for Arabic and Hebrew users when taskbar icons weren’t centered, and addressed an issue where panning a folder of pinned apps with touch would dismiss Start.
  • Bluetooth: Fixed an issue where supported Bluetooth devices weren’t showing battery levels.
  • Xbox FSE: Resolved unexpected app and game behavior when using FSE, with continued scenario validation keeping the known issue active.
  • Lock Screen: Fixed an issue that could cause the password icon to appear blank on the login screen.
  • Settings: Resolved a crash when interacting with audio devices and corrected the reversed keyboard character repeat delay setting in the “Keyboard” page.
  • Other: Addressed clipped text in msinfo32 at high display scaling, resolved failures when opening .appinstaller files to install MSIX packages, fixed a Notepad issue where underscores wouldn’t display at 125 percent scaling with certain fonts, and addressed an explorer.exe hang at login caused by certain startup apps that could prevent the taskbar from appearing.

Microsoft also notes known issues with these updates, including:

  • Xbox Full Screen Experience for PC: Some apps may behave unexpectedly when using FSE, especially those that rely on fixed window sizes or open additional windows.
  • Taskbar: Some apps may not appear in the system tray when they should.
  • Graphics: Microsoft plans to release a fix for secondary monitors that may display incorrectly or show black screens after recent updates.
  • Click to Do: A fix is in progress for an issue where the Microsoft 365 Copilot prompt box on selected images doesn’t function if the Microsoft 365 Copilot app isn’t running.
