Out-of-band update for Windows 11

KB5077744 and KB5077797 fix shutdown and sign-in bugs on Windows 11

Microsoft’s update quality continues to slip, forcing an emergency fix for bugs in Windows 11’s latest security update.

  • Microsoft released out-of-band updates KB5077744 and KB5077797 to fix bugs introduced in the January 2026 Patch Tuesday update.
  • Affected issues include Remote Desktop authentication failures on Windows 11 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2.
  • Windows 11 23H2 devices with Secure Launch could not shut down or hibernate and instead restarted.

Microsoft is now releasing the Out-of-band (OOB) update KB5077744 as builds 26200.7627 and 26100.7627 for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 to address a bug with the Remote Desktop authentication process introduced with the January 2026 update.

In addition, the company is making available the Out-of-band update KB5077797, build 22631.6494, for Windows 11 23H2 to address the same Remote Desktop authentication problems, as well as a recent problem introduced with the first security update of the year that prevented users from fully shutting down their computers.

On January 13, 2026, Microsoft began rolling out the first Patch Tuesday Update of 2026 for versions 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2, as a small release with only security fixes. However, shortly after, a small number of devices running version 23H2 with Secure Launch were unable to shut down or enter hibernation. Instead, the computer would restart.

At the same time, after installing the update KB5074109 on versions 25H2 and 24H2, some users started to experience sign-in failure during Remote Desktop connections. This bug was also affecting devices running version 23H2.

Now, the company is quickly making available the Out-of-band update KB5077744 and KB5077797 to address the issue on affected devices.

Out-of-band (OOB) updates explained

Out-of-band updates are emergency patches released outside the regular monthly schedule. Microsoft issues them to address urgent problems (such as newly discovered security flaws or critical bugs) that can’t wait for the next Patch Tuesday.

These updates are cumulative, meaning they include all previous fixes (security and non-security) plus the new targeted resolution.
