Among all the designs changes Microsoft has included with Surface Pro 3, compare to its predecessor, was moving the Windows (home) button to the side of the bezel. One of the main reason for the change was because the new Type Cover magnetic strip that offers more stability will also block the button.
However many Surface Pro 3 reviewers found themselves accidentally hitting the button while using the pen, taking them from the current application to the Start screen. I haven’t personally find this as a big issue using the pen, but I did find this issue quiet often when using the tablet in landscape orientation.

One particular Surface Pro 3 user, Gabe at Penny Arcade, has previously expressed his frustration using the Surface Pen and constantly hitting the Windows button making it almost impossible to work. To his surprise Microsoft contacted him and offered a solution to this problem.
Basically the Surface team was able to code an update that will disabled the button when the pen gets in contact with the screen, and stays disabled for a few seconds after lifting the pen to give users enough time to lift their hands and select items from the menu without having to get in trouble with the home button.
Apparently the solution works as expected, but Microsoft still in the process on deciding how to actually implement the solution and when it will be available for all Surface Pro 3 users.
It’s good to hear that a solution has been found, but perhaps the most important thing to note here, is how Microsoft is paying close attention to its products and listening to customers. We’re seeing this across the board with in Windows 8.1 and all its improvements, Xbox One, and now also with Surface Pro 3.
As a personal note, I like the solution Microsoft is implementing, but I do believe that people who already know how to get around Windows 8.1 can do away with the problem as we can simply swipe from the edge to bring the Charms and find the Windows button there. As such I would also like to see an option to disable the button completely.
