Previously, we heard that Microsoft’s Windows RT OS had been jailbroken opening the doors to run unsigned ARM-based desktop applications. After reports around the web starting pouring, the software giant stated that it wasn’t something that could compromise Windows’ security, and applauded the ingenuity “of the folks who worked this out”.
However, now a user known as Netham45 at the XDA Developers forum, who early this week was able to run Windows 95 inside the RT operating system, just made available a tool for anyone to download and Jailbreak Windows RT making a bit easier for enthusiast to start thinking that is possible to port their own applications to ARM-based devices like Surface RT.
The tool simply automates the process of jailbreaking, and even though that now isn’t necessary to be an expert to reproduce clrok’s method, you are still limited to the fact that all of this works while the computer is turned-on, and that you need to re-apply the batch file at every reboot.
It still unclear if Microsoft will ever release a patch to fix the issue, until then there is a beacon of hope for many users who want to build their own homebrew ARM desktop applications for Windows RT.
