Microsoft is releasing Windows 11 build 28020.1673 (KB5077240) to the Canary Channel, delivering another incremental update with new features and visual changes that mirror most of the improvements coming with the March 2026 Security Update.
According to the official changelog, “Windows 11 Insider Preview Quality Update (28020.1673)” ships an updated version of File Explorer that brings dark mode to the Folder Options page. It adds a new network speed test option to the Taskbar, and includes various improvements to the Start menu, Widgets, Quick Machine Recovery, camera settings, and more.
What’s new on Windows 11 build 28020.1673
Microsoft’s official changelog in the latest preview of Windows 11 confirms.
File Explorer dark mode improvements
First, build 28020.1673 introduces an updated version of File Explorer that improves the color mode experience with the addition of dark mode for the Folders Options page.

Speed test in the Taskbar
Starting with build 28020.1673, the Taskbar introduces a built-in network speed test. You can launch it from the Wi-Fi or Cellular Quick Settings panel, or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray.
The test opens in your web browser and measures Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Cellular connections, making it easier to evaluate performance and diagnose connectivity issues.

Quick Machine Recovery new behavior
Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) now activates by default on the “Pro” edition of Windows 11 for non-domain-joined computers that are not enrolled in enterprise endpoint management. These systems receive the same automated recovery protections as Windows 11 Home.

For domain-joined or enterprise-managed devices, the recovery feature remains disabled unless an organization chooses to enable it.
Start menu new account benefits option
A new entry in the account menu on the Start menu now links directly to the Microsoft account benefits page. This addition makes it easier to view, explore, and manage the benefits associated with your Microsoft account within the Windows experience.

Camera Pan and Tilt support
Starting with the update KB5077240, Microsoft is updating the “Cameras” settings to enable pan and tilt on supported cameras. The settings available under the “Basic settings” options are while on the camera’s page.

Widgets improvements
Widget settings now open as a full-page experience within the Widgets app instead of appearing in a dialog.

Emoji 16
Microsoft is also including new emojis from version 16, including face with bags under eyes, fingerprint, leafless tree, root vegetable, harp, shovel, and splatter.
Windows Search improvements
Group headers now display the number of results, making it easier to spot when more items are available. Also, you can now preview results by hovering over an item and selecting “Preview” to see its content without opening it.
Backup restoration changes
The first sign-in restore experience is now integrated into Windows Backup for Organizations, extending this capability to a broader range of device scenarios. As a result of this enhancement, user settings and Microsoft Store apps are automatically restored the first time a user signs in on Microsoft Entra hybrid-joined devices, Cloud PCs, and multi-user environments.
This addition streamlines device refreshes, upgrades, and transfers by delivering a consistent and predictable setup experience across managed environments.
Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT)
This update introduces support for Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) Arm64 devices. Network administrators can now deploy and run core management tools directly on Arm-based computers, including Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services Tools, Active Directory Certificate Services Tools, Server Manager, Group Policy Management Tools, DNS Server Tools, and DHCP Server Tools.
RSAT components are offered as optional features. They can be installed from Settings > System > Optional features, or through Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off.
Other fixes
In the Settings app, this rollout improves the reliability of configuring options in Bluetooth & Devices > Wheel.
Finally, Nearby Sharing increases reliability when sending larger files.
Other details
It’s important to clarify that Windows 11 26H1 is not a feature update for existing devices. The software giant has explicitly confirmed that version 26H1 is not an upgrade path for computers running Windows 11 25H2 or any earlier release.
This release is designed exclusively for new ARM64 hardware and will ship only on next-generation computers, starting with devices powered by Snapdragon X2 Plus, Elite, and Extreme processors. Systems based on Intel or AMD platforms will never receive Windows 11 26H1 through Windows Update or any other supported upgrade channel.
Preview build download
To download and install this Windows 11 build, enroll your devices in the Canary Channel through the “Windows Insider Program” settings from the “Update & Security” section. Once you enroll the computer in the program, you can download the build from the “Windows Update” settings by turning on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option and clicking the “Check for Updates” button.
