  • The Xbox Full Screen Experience has officially been rebranded as Xbox mode.
  • The new mode provides a controller-optimized interface for Windows 11 PC gamers.
  • The feature is rolling out now, but it may take some time to reach everyone.

Microsoft is now rolling out Xbox mode to PCs running Windows 11, expanding the console-like gaming experience beyond handheld devices to desktops, laptops, and tablets. The feature, previously known as the Xbox Full Screen Experience, is now officially rebranded and entering a broader release phase in select markets.

The rollout is gradual, meaning some users can access the experience immediately, while availability will expand over the coming weeks.

Xbox mode brings a console-style experience to Windows 11

Xbox mode introduces a controller-optimized, full-screen interface designed to make PC gaming feel closer to using an Xbox console. The experience prioritizes ease of use and immersion by surfacing your game library and minimizing distractions from the traditional desktop.

Using the new Xbox mode, users can browse and launch games through a controller-first interface and access an aggregated library that includes Xbox Game Pass and titles from other PC storefronts. Also, you can quickly switch between Xbox mode and the Windows 11 desktop

Because the feature is built directly into Windows 11, it retains the openness of the computer ecosystem while layering a more streamlined gaming interface on top.

Expansion beyond handheld devices

Microsoft originally introduced this experience on Windows 11 handhelds under the name Full Screen Experience. However, with this update, the company is extending it to a wider range of devices, including traditional PCs.

This move is part of a broader strategy to make the Xbox experience more consistent across different screen sizes and device types, while still preserving the flexibility of Windows as an open gaming platform.

Gradual rollout in select markets

Xbox mode is not available to everyone yet. Microsoft has confirmed that the feature is currently rolling out in select markets. Availability will expand gradually over the next several weeks, and not all devices will receive it at the same time.

This staged rollout replaces earlier assumptions that the feature would be tied strictly to a specific cumulative update or app version.

How to get Xbox mode on Windows 11

To receive Xbox mode as soon as it becomes available, users should ensure their system is configured to receive the latest updates by turning on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they are available” option in the “Windows Update” settings page, then checking for updates to download the May 2026 Security Update (preview).

Once the update is installed, the option will be availble from the “Gaming” section of the Settings app.

Alternatively, I previously published instructions for forcing the Full Screen Experience, which still work for anyone who needs access to it.

Pureinfotech’s Take

Xbox mode is a strategic shift rather than just an interface tweak. Microsoft is effectively bridging the gap between console and PC gaming without sacrificing the openness that defines Windows 11.

Instead of forcing users into a closed ecosystem, the company is layering a console-like experience on top of the existing platform. If execution holds up, this could become one of the most meaningful usability improvements for PC gaming in years, especially for controller-first players and living room setups.

However, the success of Xbox mode will ultimately depend on how seamlessly it integrates with existing launchers and whether it can truly reduce friction compared to the standard desktop workflow.
