Microsoft has released Windows 11 build 26300.8142 as the update KB5079492 for version 26H2 through the Dev Channel of the Windows Insider Program. This preview introduces some new features and a small set of improvements and fixes.
In addition, the company is rolling out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.8138 (KB5079491) in the Beta Channel with almost all the same changes and fixes available in the Dev Channel.
According to the company, the “Windows 11 Insider Preview Quality Update (26300.8142)” ships with the Administrator Protection feature, new settings to customize the right-click zone on the touchpad, and a new icon to indicate whether a printer supports Windows Protected Print Mode.
Microsoft is also releasing an updated version of the Task Manager with better insights about the Neural Processing Unit (NPU).
Although these changes are part of development for version 26H2, the operating system may still report version 25H2 in Settings for now. Microsoft will update the version number closer to the official release.
What’s new on Windows 11 build 26300.8142
These are the new features and improvements rolling out in the Dev Channel:
Administrator Protection feature
Starting with builds 26300.8142 and 26300.8142, the company is resuming the rollout of the Administrator Protection feature, which is a feature that enhances the security of accounts with administrative privileges.
Typically, users in the “Administrators” group can modify system settings and install apps without restrictions. While these capabilities are useful, they also present a significant security risk, as malicious actors can exploit them to compromise the system.

This feature helps mitigate these risks by reducing the likelihood of users accidentally making system-level changes and preventing malware from silently making unauthorized modifications.
Touchpad customization
In this release, the company is also adding a new setting in the “Touchpad” section that lets you choose the size of the right-click zone, the portion at the bottom-right of the touchpad.
The new setting lets you choose between default, small, medium, and large.
Microsoft notes that this setting only appears for touchpads with a pressable surface. Also, some manufacturers may provide customization for this in their own apps.
If your device is configured with a custom setting through an app, the “Custom” option will appear in the “Touchpad” settings.
Task Manager with NPU insights
In addition, you’ll find an updated version of the Task Manager that provides more NPU details, including new optional “NPU” and “NPU Engine” columns on the “Processes,” “Users,” and “Details” pages.
Furthermore, the “Details” page adds optional columns for “NPU Dedicated Memory” and “NPU Shared Memory” to provide more insights into NPU workloads.
The software giant notes that the team is also adding a new optional “Isolation” column to the “Processes” and “Details” pages, allowing you to see which apps are running in an AppContainer.
Windows Protected Print Mode changes
Finally, this rollout updates printer settings to display a new icon on printers that support Windows Protected Print Mode.
This change is only available in the Dev Channel, not the Beta Channel.
Other changes
The company has also released several other improvements for the operating system:
- Accessibility: Fixes an issue impacting the use of Braille.
- Display language: Addressed a problem with the operating system, showing English as the language rather than their preferred language. This fix is only available in the Beta Channel.
