  • PowerToys 0.99 introduces Grab And Move to drag and resize windows without using the title bar.
  • The new Power Display tool lets you control hardware controls like brightness, contrast, and profiles directly from Windows 11.

On Windows 11, PowerToys version 0.99 introduces new features, “Grab And Move” and “Power Display,” as well as improvements to the Command Palette and Keyboard Manager.

In this guide, I’ll highlight the most interesting features available in version 0.99 of PowerToys.

Grab And Move

Currently, you have to click the titlebar to drag a window on the screen, but it’s easy to miss the click at a specific target area. The Grab And Move feature lets you drag and even resize a window without clicking the titlebar or grabbing the edge.

Once you update to the latest version of PowerToys, you can hold down “Alt + Left click” and left-click anywhere on the window to drag it around the desktop. The “Alt + Right click” shortcut lets you resize the window with an up or down gesture.

To enable the feature, open PowerToys > Windowing & Layouts > Grab And Move, and turn on the “Grab And Move” toggle switch.

Power Display

In PowerToys, Power Display is a tool that brings the hardware controls from your monitor to the Windows 11 desktop, so you don’t have to reach the physical controls on the display.

After installing the application and enabling the feature, you can access it from the Taskbar System Tray, and the Power Display will automatically detect and let you control supported features, including volume, brightness, contrast, and color profile.

Furthermore, you can create profiles with custom monitor settings for different setups, and switch between them automatically using the “Light Switch” tool. This way, the monitor can use a different configuration depending on the system color mode.

To enable the feature, open PowerToys > Input & Output > Power Display, and turn on the “Power Display” toggle switch.

Other improvements

In addition to the new tools, PowerToys also introduces improvements for existing tools, including Command Palette, Keyboard Manager, and ZoomIt.

Command Palette

In this release, Command Palette adds support for plain-text and image-viewer content types for extensions, and persistent calculator history.

Additionally, you can now keep the Dock always at the top of other windows, there’s a new “Compact” mode, and the company is shipping various fixes and improvements.

Keyboard Manager

Microsoft is also introducing a new Keyboard Manager Editor that makes it easier to create and manage remappings, including the ability to manually tweak recorded keys.

Finally, there is a new action called “Disabled” to turn off specific keys or shortcuts.

ZoomIt

As part of the changes for the ZoomIt tool, it’s now possible to take screenshots while scrolling to capture long pages, such as web pages.

Also, the break timer now includes a new saver mode to improve the way you step away and take breaks more efficiently.

As per usual, the company is also improving other tools in PowerToys, including Image Resizer, Advanced Paste, and more.
